The following is a brief update on the Mississippi Whitewater Park project:

LEGISLATIVE BILLS INTRODUCED

Bills for the MWP have been introduced in both the MN House and Senate - HF 1269 and SF 1284. The bill would appropriate $683,000 from the general fund, $333,000 to match federal funding ($1,000,000) and $350,000 for DNR staff for the project.

PROJECT DESIGN AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE CORPS AND DNR

The Attorney General's Office and the Corp's legal staff are in the process of resolving issues related to the state's liability and auditing.

HYDROPOWER RE-LICENSING

Excel has offered to donate land on Hennepin Island and any lands owned near the lower dam, $2 million in enhancements to Hennepin Island and $175,000/ year for 30 years for development and maintenance of Hennepin Island recreation facilities. The DNR's position is that additional $ is needed for development of the MWP. Mpls is supportive of restoring both the upper and lower dam areas. Negotiations are continuing.

MEETING WITH THE U of M MARCH 12

The U is very supportive of the MWP and recognize the benefits of enhancing the riverfront and steamplant area. Harvey Turner, Director of Planning and Progamming is the U of M contact person.

Please contact Steve Mueller (651-297-4955) if you have any questions or comments on the above.
